Summary

A lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this incredible new science-based thriller from the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Martian

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish。

Except that right now, he doesn't know that。 He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it。

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time。 And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company。

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him。 Alone on this tiny ship that's been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it's up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species。

And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance。

Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian - while taking us to places it never dreamed of going。

Andy Weir has clearly found a formula that works。 A brilliant lone scientist stuck in space, who must overcome calamity after calamity in order to survive and hopefully get home。This time, the story involves space fungi that are eating our sun (technically, it's more like a space algae, but whatever)。 The nations of Earth band together and launch a mission to the stars in order to turn the tide on this interstellar parasite。Our narrator wakes from a coma and doesn't remember a thing。 Where is he Andy Weir has clearly found a formula that works。 A brilliant lone scientist stuck in space, who must overcome calamity after calamity in order to survive and hopefully get home。This time, the story involves space fungi that are eating our sun (technically, it's more like a space algae, but whatever)。 The nations of Earth band together and launch a mission to the stars in order to turn the tide on this interstellar parasite。Our narrator wakes from a coma and doesn't remember a thing。 Where is he? How did he get there? What is his name?Like Mark Watney before him in The Martian, our narrator is going to have to "science the shit" out of his situation in order to answer all the questions above, and also hopefully, maybe save Earth, too。Oh, and sprinkle in a bit of first contact as well。 Mark Watney never found himself a sidekick while he was on Mars。Some parts were overly verbose, other parts were cringe-worthy and corny, but this was still an entertaining story I tore through in about 3 days。If you liked The Martian, you're going to like this book。 If you didn't, well, sorry。 This book is more of that and then some。 。。。more

Let me start by saying, I love this book。 The narration by Ray Porter is incredible。 I've had a difficult time getting into sci-fi audiobooks。 My imagination let's me dive deep into sci-fi when reading books。 But with audiobooks, I've found myself thinking about the narrator and I'm often yanked out of the story entirely。 Superb job by Porter with the voices and accents。Onto the actual book。 Weir crushes this book。 It's funny。 My wife asked me numerous times "what's so funny" and I point to my e Let me start by saying, I love this book。 The narration by Ray Porter is incredible。 I've had a difficult time getting into sci-fi audiobooks。 My imagination let's me dive deep into sci-fi when reading books。 But with audiobooks, I've found myself thinking about the narrator and I'm often yanked out of the story entirely。 Superb job by Porter with the voices and accents。Onto the actual book。 Weir crushes this book。 It's funny。 My wife asked me numerous times "what's so funny" and I point to my earbuds and she knows "it's the book。" There's ample amounts of tension。 Some real "page-turner/edge of your seat" moments。 And an ending that feels right。 It still leaves a lot on the bone, like any good sci-fi book。 But it answers all of the questions that NEED to be answered and leaves you wanting to stay in that universe longer to find out more details。 I loved this book and will be giving it another run through again, I'm sure。I do have some criticism though。 While I loved the 3 main characters, Grace, Rocky, & Stratt, I was underwhelmed by the supporting cast。 In the Hollywood movie, which is definitely happening even though I have zero proof to back it up, they will need to do a great job casting the other 2 crew members of the Hail Mary to make me care one bit about them。 Because I sure didn't the first time through this book。But the real elephant in the room is how similar this book is to The Martian。 I mean, SO CLOSE。 It feels like the exact same formula; likeable Mr。 Science Astronaut, stranded alone in space, all of humanity comes together for a common cause, Mr Science Astronaut escapes certain death with his brain and lots of luck。Now if this is how Weir is going to write books, I'm all for it。 He can crank out 25 books with this formula and if they're as good as Hail Mary and The Martian, I'll thoroughly enjoy reading every damn one。 And Mr Weir will become a very rich man having done so。 But I was anticipating something fresh。 So it may just be initial shock as to why I'm even bringing it up。 Weir may only write books with this formula。 Or he may write a whole series of books like this。 To give him a baseball equivalence, he might be a specialist。 A LOOGY like me。 You come in, strike one guy out in a pivotal situation, go home, sleep, then do it again tomorrow。 You're a one trick pony, but boy is your one trick special。Time will tell if Andy Weir ventures out of his comfort zone in his next novel。 Either way though, I'll be consuming whatever it is he decides to do。 And if it's anything like Hail Mary, or The Martian, I'll love it, too。 。。。more

I loved the Martian but did not like Artemis at all。 Glad I gave Project Hail Mary a chance because Andy Weir redeemed himself with this book。 Love the characters and the world building。 Excited to read more of his work in the future!

Really enjoyed this book。 Similar style to The Martian, so if you didn't like that book you probably won't like this one。 Some interesting problem solving with a bit of human interest thrown in too。 I would have given this 5 starts but there were a couple of questions left hanging at the end which I would have liked answered one way or another, but I can see why that wasn't possible given the ending we were given。 Anyway, very satisfying, well written and a good pace to the book。 Really enjoyed this book。 Similar style to The Martian, so if you didn't like that book you probably won't like this one。 Some interesting problem solving with a bit of human interest thrown in too。 I would have given this 5 starts but there were a couple of questions left hanging at the end which I would have liked answered one way or another, but I can see why that wasn't possible given the ending we were given。 Anyway, very satisfying, well written and a good pace to the book。 。。。more

Geeky fun, this time starring a middle school science teacher。 I got a kick out of the contrast between Ryland Grace's "holy moly" type expressions and the voice of Mark Watney in The Martian。I read this after seeing a friend had given it a 5-star review, but deliberately didn't read any reviews or even the blurb。 That was the perfect way to read it。 There are lots of surprises here and it was fun letting them wash over me。Earth's first contact with aliens turns out to be with something that's m Geeky fun, this time starring a middle school science teacher。 I got a kick out of the contrast between Ryland Grace's "holy moly" type expressions and the voice of Mark Watney in The Martian。I read this after seeing a friend had given it a 5-star review, but deliberately didn't read any reviews or even the blurb。 That was the perfect way to read it。 There are lots of surprises here and it was fun letting them wash over me。Earth's first contact with aliens turns out to be with something that's moved into our solar system and is eating the sun - kind of a space algae。 It opens with Grace waking up on a ship, having been in a medically induced coma for an unknown but apparently long time, with no memories of who he is or how he got there。 His memories come back in bits and pieces as he figures out what his mission is。 As readers, we go back and forth between the events leading up to his mission and the present-time troubles。 I guess all that's probably in the blurb。 I really don't want to spoil it for anyone so I don't think I'll go any further with the summary。It's a page-turner and it's full of sciency stuff, the same sweet spot Weir hit with The Martian。 Ryland Grace is an interesting character, and so are his friend Rocky and the powerful Eva Stratt。 The situation is fascinating。 There are lots of twists and turns in the plot, and Ryland Grace is more complicated and maybe more relatable than the all-American hero astronaut-engineer Mark Watney。There's none of the philosophizing or moral dilemmas you see in a lot of first contact stories。 It's straightforward at the beginning - it's kill or be killed; the astrophages are eating the sun and it won't be long till half of humanity will be dead, not to mention the effects on other life on Earth。 Later, when those questions might be more relevant, there's a constant stream of problems to be solved with science。 。。。more

Brilliant! Absolutely one of my favorite books of all time, the author has really outdone himself and I cannot wait to see the movie! Has all the feels, I learned a ton about science and astronomy, and cried my eyes out at the end of the book。 Loved every minute of it!

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir didn't disappoint! Another brilliant space survival story with a few massive twists and the fate of all mankind hanging in the balance。 I really don't want to say any more so I don't give away major plot points and spoil surprises。 Needless to say, this is another novel that should be made into a blockbuster movie, but maybe with Tom Hiddleston playing the lead role of Ryland Grace。 A solid 5 out of 5 star read as anticipated! I was so excited for this and it didn't disappoint me。 There is a lot of science talk in this book。 Like REALLY boring science that makes me have to read super slow so I can to understand what's happening。 At least it should be boring, but instead it's edge of your seat, cliff-hanger stuff。 I don't know how Andy Weir does it。 I think he may be a magician。While this is definitely a plot driven novel, it has great characters。 Both Ryland Grace and Rocky are smart, snarky, and easy to root for。 Wit I was so excited for this and it didn't disappoint me。 There is a lot of science talk in this book。 Like REALLY boring science that makes me have to read super slow so I can to understand what's happening。 At least it should be boring, but instead it's edge of your seat, cliff-hanger stuff。 I don't know how Andy Weir does it。 I think he may be a magician。While this is definitely a plot driven novel, it has great characters。 Both Ryland Grace and Rocky are smart, snarky, and easy to root for。 Without spoilers I'll just say it took a turn I wasn't expecting and I'm okay with that。 Now, can Matt Damon play Ryland Grace in the movie, please?Content: mild language, drug use, suicide themes 。。。more

I had trouble sleeping without finishing this book。 It's got the same type of humor and science as The Martian but is also in some ways very different。I will semi-spoiler the first bit that you'd within a short amount of reading without spoiling the rest but stop here if you don't want even that。I was excited to talk about potentially non-water based life! Let say this first, I liked it。 I really enjoyed it。 But, and this is going to be the majority of the review, a big but。 The Science Escape Room Genre that Weir has carved for himself worked like a charm in The Martian, but it struggles outside of the Valley Marineris。 In space nobody can hear you do long division! I was originally going with 3 stars, but I found myself gripped and didn't want to stop until I had finished; at times, I wondered if Weir wrote all protagonists across his books too similarly, but I grew not to mind it; the audible narration of the book is fantastic; the style does force a reader to suspend disbelief, especially in the earlier chapters (that's really going through his mind in that state??? really????)。 So 3。5 stars。 I was originally going with 3 stars, but I found myself gripped and didn't want to stop until I had finished; at times, I wondered if Weir wrote all protagonists across his books too similarly, but I grew not to mind it; the audible narration of the book is fantastic; the style does force a reader to suspend disbelief, especially in the earlier chapters (that's really going through his mind in that state??? really????)。 So 3。5 stars。 。。。more

This book was SO GOOD! I'm not sure if it's the best book I've read all year, but it's definitely a contender。 I absolutely loved The Martian, but I think I might love this book even more。 This book was very science-heavy and I'm not going to pretend like I understood all of it, but this never made the book drag nor did I feel like I couldn't follow the story。 I understood enough to generally follow what was going on and even if you have no science background everything important is explained in This book was SO GOOD! I loved Rocky and the best part of the book was definitely Ryland figuring out how to communicate with him。 I just loved their relationship and thought it was interesting, well-developed, and realistic。 Plus it was nice that they decided to trust each other from the get-go。I was kind of worried that the ending of this was going to spoil the rest of the book。 I take my endings very seriously so I'm not kidding when I say that the ending of a book colours my entire opinion of the text。 Fortunately, the I completely loved the ending of this。 It wasn't what I expected (though in hindsight I feel like I should have predicted it) but I thought it suited the story perfectly! I think it's adorable that Ryland became a teacher to a bunch of alien children -- it's perfect for him! And from the flashbacks it seems like Ryland's relationship with Rocky was much stronger than any of his relationships with humans (who would all be old/dead by the end of the novel anyway)。 (hide spoiler)]Anyways, I can't wait to re-read this! It kept me up super late, but that's the sign of a great book。 I highly, highly recommend it。 。。。more

I read it quickly。 I really enjoyed it and I don’t give 5 stars frequently。 One of the few books I wished was longer。 Same Andy Weir style, near achievable science fiction problem solving with current science and a scientist as the main character。 I also liked that he was a teacher too。
